Corruption is a global ill that erodes trust, weakens democracy, hampers economic development and further exacerbates inequality and poverty. It is a menace which fights back efforts made and therefore requires intentional collective effort to confront it.
The International Anti-Corruption Day is annually commemorated on December 9th, a date which marks the anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), in Mexico in 2003. This is a significant milestone in the global fight against corruption. This is the UNCAC 20th anniversary, hence the theme UNCAC at 20: Uniting the World Against Corruption.
The day affords governments, civil society and the public sector an opportunity to join forces against corruption. Several activities are held to commemorate this day. In an effort to join the world in the commemorations, Commonwealth Africa Anti-Corruption Centre, in collaboration with African Association of Public Administration and Management, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Republic of Kosovo and Stellenbosch University will host an Online Café Conversation to engage country experts on ‘The SWOT Analysis of diverse governments’ efforts in the fight against corruption’.
